National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) issued a Notice to Mariners in reference to electronic navigational charts display of isolated shoal soundings. They reported that ECDIS may not display some isolated shoal depths when operating in “Base” or “Standard” display mode. Route planning and monitoring alarms may not always be activated.

Megayachts have always been a part of the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, Fla. Their towering white hulls and superstructures provided the nautical backdrop for this Monaco-style 1.8 mile, 14 turn, street race around the St. Pete waterfront. Unfortunately, the megayachts will be missing from the 2010 event. The Acura Yacht Club – an assembly of temporarily installed floating docks – will not be a feature of this year’s event.

The U.S. Coast Guard announced this week it will decommission the Long Range Aids to Navigation (Loran-C) program and terminate the Loran-C signal broadcasts on Feb. 8.Technological advances in the past 20 years have determined that Loran-C is no longer required as a maritime navigational tool, the agency said in a news release. The final Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement (PEIS) on Loran-C program was announced by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on June 12. Loran stations are expected to cease transmitting by Oct. 1.

EU Court: Island luxury tax illegalThe luxury tax that the Italian island of Sardinia imposed on visiting yachts and aircraft in 2006 has been ruled unfair in the European Court of Justice, according to news reports.An Italian court requested an opinion on the tax’s legality from the European Union after the local marine industry objected that the tax unfairly gave Italian vessels an economic advantage over fellow EU-registered vessels.
